Safety And Shelving Units

Unfortunately, with shelving units there are safety issues that need to be addressed. It needs only a bit of common sense and a little extra time and effort to ensure your assembled shelves or shelving systems do not cause any problems where safety is concerned. When assembling or making wooden shelves, goggles and safety shoes should be worn as well as appropriate clothing.

Metal shelving units, in particular, can be a safety hazard. Indeed, in the industrial sector, lack of bracing makes their use illegal. This, however, can be fixed by adding some way of restraining the unit. Attaching them securely to a wall would probably be the least expensive option. Since racks are mostly supplied without enough bracing anybody bumping into them heavily may cause it to fold over sideways and the result can be tragic.

Unstable shelving units that are not against a wall may very well topple over and cause a serious injury to anyone caught in their fall. It is recommended that a strip of wood is attached to their top and is connected to another shelving unit or secured to the nearest wall.

If metal racking is fixed separately from other units or the wall, it must be well braced to make a totally rigid unit. Any movement in the joints at all will eventually cause the bolts to loosen and come undone.

Wooden shelving units must always be attached to a wall or firmly braced if you intend to use them as a free-standing unit.

Industrial shelving in Warehouses

In warehouses, the storing of packaged goods and bulky items is often necessary. To this end, industrial metal shelving is ideal for the job. Typically, shelf load bearing capacities may range from 300 to 1000 pounds in weight.

There are two basic types of shelving. Open shelving with cross strut bracing on the sides and back. Closed shelving has solid sides and back. Open shelving is well suited to store the larger or bulkier items while closed shelving is best for the storage of smaller items.

There are a good many different sizes of shelves available as well. The depths vary from 12 to 36 inches, typically there are three widths of shelf, from 36 to 48 inches, and their heights range from 39 to 123 inches.  Some shelves are installed with clips and are adjustable. As an alternative to the metal cross back brace, some shelving units have gussets and this makes them easy to access from both sides.

Dividers may be available to separate different categories of stock from each other on the same shelf. Many metal shelving systems may be mounted on tracks to make best possible use of what may sometimes be a limited amount of floor space.

Some industries require a clean, dust-free environment – industries such as food, medical supplies, electronics and retail for example. In these cases, wire metal shelving units are perfect for the job. Typically, a wire shelving unit will be quick and easy to fit together and disassembly is equally simple.

A material world

DIY is something that almost every man has tried in his time, to one degree or another. During his quest to build and maintain his home the average man accumulates many dozens of tools. Some he may use again, others, he may never use. However, they will not be thrown away as they may be needed in the near future. DIY is no longer a male preserve and many women engage in it with a great deal of success. They may face similar issues of tool accumulation.

Tools do, indeed, build up and the take over the house or the garage. Due to the wide range and selection of tools that are available, buying just a few does not seem to be an option. Tools build up and gather dust, taking up valuable space and there needs to be a solution. The solution to the dilemma is shelving units. There are a variety of shelving units available on the market, some of which are wood, plastic and metal shelving. Each of these materials has their own benefits.

Wood

These shelves look great and are ideal for the domestic environment. Wood is used to support books, ornaments or even family photos and other sentimental belongings, and comes in a variety of colours and wood types.

Plastic

Plastic is ideal for portability. The lightweight frames make them a number one choice for anyone that likes to move their storage around.

Metal

This sturdy frame is a must for anyone who wants to store heavyweight objects. Metal shelving also comes in a variety of colours so it can blend in with any room.

Storage units may be swiftly assembled these days

Quick assembly storage units are ideal for anyone needing to store or stack items in a hurry. There are people who can’t or won’t wait for Mr. Fix-it to come round and assemble a large racking unit or a dozen shelves onto the wall. Let us face it, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea indulging in the art of DIY. Sometimes wall units can be tricky to mount. Also walls are not always as reliable as first constructed. They can deteriorate over time. That’s where quick assembly shelving comes into its own.

These shelves can be thrown up in a matter of minutes. They are so easy and practical to construct. Some of them don’t even require bolts or screws. The only thing needed for the assembly of these great storage units is a hammer. Some metal frames can support a weight more than 250 kilogrammes. This means that all sorts of hardware can be stored including: tins of paint, toolboxes, spare car batteries as well as many other domestic items.

The shelves are quite often adjustable to allow the accommodation of the taller or bulkier items. There are also different types of metal, from attractive chrome to galvanized steel that would suit any kitchen. Different colours are also available to blend with the surroundings.

Some contemporary manufacturers produce a wide variety of metal shelving, as well as other materials, suitable for a variety of uses. These units are usually finished to a high standard and support various weights.
